Building Energy

Buildings are the single largest contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Atherton, accounting for 65% of all emissions. Transitioning away from burning fossil fuels - like gas - for electricity is our greatest opportunity to reduce emissions and air pollution.

Community Wide Energy Use

Atherton's Electricity is Clean Energy

We’ve reached such low levels of emissions from electricity by shifting where our supply comes from. The electricity in Atherton is provided by Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE) - a non-profit joint powers agency formed as a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) program by San Mateo County.

Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) is a program that towns and cities can adopt to switch everyone in the community over to cleaner energy. Electricity is purchased in bulk from a competitive supplier on behalf of all residents. Through this process, residents can get access to cleaner energy sources for a reduced rate.

Since 2016, PCE has been providing the residents and businesses of the County and all 20 of its cities and towns with electricity from clean energy sources like wind and solar.

electrify 78% of existing buildings by 2045

Breaking Our Reliance on Fossil Fuels

Effectively all our remaining GHGs in buildings are from natural gas, which is why one of the key objectives of our Climate Action Plan is to electrify 26% of existing buildings by 2030. By 2045, that number needs to be 78% of existing buildings.

Meanwhile, all new buildings will only use electricity as an energy fuel source. By doing this, we can break our reliance on fossil fuels when it comes to our building energy usage.
